De drie grootste fouten die startende kalligrafen maken! | The Three Biggest Mistakes New Calligraphers Make!
Als beginnende creatieveling met ambitie in moderne kalligrafie kun je niet alles meteen weten. Dat snap ik helemaal, ik ben namelijk precies zo begonnen. Leer dus vandaag van mijn fouten en lees mee met de drie grootste fouten die startende kalligrafen maken!
#1: Te weinig tijd besteden aan de losse letters
I get it. Het is zoveel leuker om meteen woorden en leuke quotes te schrijven, maar… ook bij moderne kalligrafie zul je eerst moeten leren lopen voordat je kunt rennen. Net zoals vroeger bij zwemles begin je in het ondiepe, voordat je in het diepe mag springen. Zou je dit alles niet doen, dan zou je jezelf continu bezeren - en, dan zul je het echt nooit leren. (JA het rijmt!)
Het zit zo. Op het moment dat jij je nog bezig moet houden met hoe die ene letter geschreven moet worden, kun jij je aandacht niet geven aan de letter die er NA komt. Pas zodra je alle letters zonder na te denken kunt schrijven, heb je de ruimte in je hoofd om vooruit te kijken - en dus te anticiperen op hoe letters op elkaar aansluiten, zodat ze woorden vormen.
#2: Werken met de verkeerde materialen.
Te flexibele penpunten (nibs) die veel te moeilijk zijn om mee te beginnen, verkeerd papier gebruiken waardoor inkt heel lelijk gaat ‘bloeden’ in de structuur, nieuwe nibs NIET schoonmaken, het zijn allemaal misstappen die zo gemaakt kunnen zijn omdat je simpelweg niet weet wat je wel moet doen! Lees dus vooral ook de blogpost waar ik je uitgebreid vertel wat de beste (en mijn favoriete!) kalligrafie materialen zijn zodat je gewoon geen fouten meer zult maken op dit gebied!
#3: Geen tijd en geld investeren in goede uitleg..
Oh, my, goodness. Elke keer gebeurt het weer. Wanneer ik met Splendith samen op een creatieve beurs sta om mensen te adviseren in de keuze van hun kalligrafie materialen, lijken ze dit maar niet van mij aan te willen nemen. Er worden tientallen euro’s zonder pardon uitgegeven aan mooie (en soms overbodige) materialen, maar een goede uitleg valt vaak buiten de boot. Redenen als ‘maar ik heb vroeger wel wat aan kalligrafie gedaan’,‘ik zoek wel wat op internet’ of ‘ach, ik ben creatief genoeg’ zijn redenen die ik moeilijk uit iemands hoofd kan praten - maar ik kijk ze wel met medelijden na..
Ik WEET namelijk uit ervaring hoeveel tijd en energie het kost om dit in je eentje te leren. Ik heb het gedaan. En ik had gewild dat ik een workshop of cursus had kunnen volgen om al die uren aan frustratie niet door te hoeven maken. Waarom ik uiteindelijk niet opgegeven heb, is mij af en toe nog steeds een raadsel. En dan kijk ik naar deze nu nog enthousiaste, goedwillende mensen die zoveel sneller succes en plezier kunnen halen uit hun nieuwe hobby wanneer ze een workshop of cursus zouden volgen, maar zien dat aan het begin nog niet in.
Maak alsjeblieft zelf niet deze fout, wanneer jij graag een mooi, eigen kalligrafie stijl wilt ontwikkelen. Investeer in goede uitleg. Ik zei het ook al in mijn blog over de 5 basismaterialen die elke kalligraaf nodig heeft en ik meende het.
De juiste schrijfhouding, hoe je werkt met een spitse kroontjespen, hoe je moet oefenen en wat de grootste valkuilen zijn om op te letten; het is waardevolle kennis die je uiteindelijk in een hele korte tijd eigen kunt maken, als je slimme keuzes maakt.

# 1: Spending too little time on the loose letters
I get it. It's so much more fun to immediately write words and fun quotes, but… even with modern calligraphy you will have to learn to walk before you can run. Just like in the past with swimming lessons, you start in the shallow before you can jump into the deep. If you wouldn't do all of this, you would be continuously hurting yourself - and, you will never really learn.
It's like this. The moment you have to worry about how that one letter should be written, you can't give your attention to the letter that comes AFTER. Only once you can write all the letters without thinking do you have the space in your head to look ahead - and thus to anticipate how letters fit together so that they form words.
# 2: Working with the wrong materials.
Nibs that are too flexible are way too difficult to start with, using the wrong paper causing ink to 'bleed' very ugly in the structure, NOT cleaning new nibs, these are all mistakes that could've been made because you simply don't know what to do! # 3: Don't invest time and money in good explanations ..
Oh my goodness. It happens every time. When I go to a creative fair with Splendith to advise people in the choice of their calligraphy materials, they don't seem to want to accept this from me. Dozens of euros are spent unceremoniously on beautiful (and sometimes unnecessary) materials, but a good explanation is often left out. Reasons like 'but I used to do some calligraphy in the past', 'I do some searching on the internet' or 'well, I'm creative enough' are reasons that I can hardly talk out of anyone's mind - but I do check them out with pity ..
I KNOW from experience how much time and energy it takes to learn this on your own. I did it. And I wish I could have taken a workshop or course so as not to have to go through all those hours of frustration. Why I did not give up in the end is still a mystery to me from time to time. And then I look at these still enthusiastic, well-intentioned people who can get success and pleasure from their new hobby so much faster when they would follow a workshop or course, but don't see that at the beginning.
Please don't make this mistake yourself if you would like to develop your own beautiful calligraphy style. Invest in good explanations. I also mentioned it in my blog about the 5 basic materials every calligrapher needs and I meant it.
The correct writing position, how to work with a pointed dip pen, how to practice and what the biggest pitfalls are to watch out for; it is valuable knowledge that you can eventually acquire in a very short time, if you make smart choices.
