Drie verschillen tussen een oblique en rechte penhouder voor moderne kalligrafie | Three differences between an oblique and a straight pen holder for modern calligraphy
Ik weet nog goed waar ik mijn allereerste materialen vandaan haalde toen ik net begon met moderne kalligrafie. Vijf jaar terug had ik nog niets, geen inkt, geen pen, geen goed papier, alleen maar informatie van Pinterest waar ik las over materialen die ik NERGENS in Nederland kon vinden.
Na een lange zoektocht...
Ja, dat was best frustrerend.. Mijn enthousiasme was dan ook groot toen ik uitgerekend in de Dille & Kamille materialen tegenkwam die ik herkende. Begrijp mij goed, er zijn altijd traditionele kalligrafie materialen beschikbaar geweest, maar ik zocht naar iets anders dan de brede penpunt en die oeroude rechte penhouder. Ik wilde werken met spitse penpunten die flexibel waren en die ene zwarte pen met dat gekke hoekje erin die ik overal online voorbij zag komen; de oblique penhouder.
Geduld is een schone zaak.
Uiteindelijk vond ik de felbegeerde penpuntjes bij de Dille & Kamille, maar het heeft lang geduurd voordat ik mijn eerste oblique pen in handen had. Ik geloof dat ik ‘m uiteindelijk via Amazon besteld heb - veeeeelste duur natuurlijk, maar dan had ik ‘m toch eindelijk in mijn bezit. Ik wist toen nog niet hoe ik er mee moest werken, dus keerde ik terug naar Pinterest om informatie op te halen. Na een tijdje kreeg ik de smaak te pakken en snapte ik hoe ik het beste resultaat kon krijgen.
Magische kalligrafie krachten?
Nou moet ik eerlijk zeggen; ik wilde die pen eigenlijk vooral hebben omdat ik ‘m overal voorbij zag komen en hier nergens kon vinden. Misschien had ik wel de hoop dat die pen mij magische kalligrafie krachten zou geven, maar niets was natuurlijk minder waar - kalligraferen kun je ook prima met een rechte pen.
Werkt het ook voor jou?
Ondanks dat zijn er een paar eigenschappen van de oblique penhouder die ik als groot voordeel ervaar boven de rechte penhouder en deze ga ik vandaag met je delen, zodat jij kunt besluiten of die oblique de kalligrafie pen voor jou is.
Verschil #1: Gemak
Een oblique pen lijkt door zijn uiterlijk moeilijker, maar is uiteindelijk gemakkelijker om mee te schrijven. Waarom? De punt van je nib moet ALTIJD naar de bovenkant van je papier staan tijdens het kalligraferen en ja, dat vraagt bij een rechte penhouder dus om een hele andere schrijfhouding dan je gewend bent. Een oblique penhouder zorgt (door het hoekje wat uitsteekt) bij de juiste schrijfhouding dat die nib standaard naar de bovenkant van je papier staat. En laat dat nou net zijn wat je als beginner zo snel mogelijk onder de knie wilt krijgen..
Verschil #2: Comfort
Je schrijfhouding is aanzienlijk beter met een oblique penhouder. Het geeft je namelijk de mogelijkheid om meer in je natuurlijke schrijfhouding te blijven, waardoor je niet je hele lichaam hoeft te draaien om die nib goed op papier te krijgen. Verschil #3 Resultaat
Mijn ervaring door de jaren heen is dat iedereen die werkt met een oblique pen, minder hard op zijn pen drukt en dus mooiere resultaten krijgt bij de dunne lijnen. Dit heeft te maken met de plek waarop je druk uitoefent; namelijk de houder zelf en indirect op de nib, terwijl je met de rechte penhouder direct op de nib druk uitoefent.
En als je linkshandig bent?
Voor linkshandigen kan een rechte penhouder prettiger zijn vanwege de gespiegelde schrijfhouding. Het is geen voorwaarde - je kunt prima als linkshandige een oblique pen gebruiken, zeker deze basic zwarte oblique (ook te vinden in onze starterskit moderne kalligrafie) is geschikt, omdat deze universeel te gebruiken is voor links- en rechtshandigen.

Yes, that was quite frustrating .. My enthusiasm went through the roof when I came across materials that I recognized in the Dille & Kamille. Don't get me wrong, there have always been traditional calligraphy materials available, but I was looking for something other than the wide nib and that ancient straight pen holder. I wanted to work with pointed nibs that were flexible and that one black pen with that crazy corner in it that I saw everywhere online; the oblique pen holder.
Patience is a virtue.
Eventually I found the coveted nibs at the Dille & Kamille, but it took a long time to get my first oblique pen. I believe I ended up ordering it through Amazon - waaaay too expensive of course, but then I finally got it. I didn't know how to work with it at the time, so I returned to Pinterest to get information. After a while I got the hang of it and I understood how to get the best result.
Magical calligraphy powers?
Well I have to be honest; I really wanted that pen mainly because I saw it everywhere and couldn't find it anywhere. Maybe I had the hope that that pen would give me magical calligraphy powers, but nothing could be further from the truth - you can also write calligraphy with a straight pen.
Does it work for you?
Despite that, there are a few features of the oblique pen holder that I find to be a big advantage over the straight pen holder and I am going to share these with you today, so that you can decide if that oblique is the calligraphy pen for you.
Difference # 1: Convenience
An oblique pen may seem more difficult due to its appearance, but it is ultimately easier to write with. Why? The tip of your nib should ALWAYS point to the top of your paper during calligraphy and yes, with a straight pen holder that requires a completely different writing position than you're used to. An oblique pen holder ensures (through the corner that protrudes) with the correct writing position that the nib is standard towards the top of your paper. And that is exactly what you as a beginner want to master as quickly as possible.
Difference #2: Comfort
Your writing posture is considerably better with an oblique pen holder. It gives you the opportunity to stay more in your natural writing position, so you don't have to turn your whole body to get that nib right on paper. Difference #3 Result
My experience over the years is that everyone who works with an oblique pen, presses less hard on their pen and thus gets better results with the thin lines. This has to do with the place where you apply pressure; namely the holder itself and indirectly on the nib, while with the straight pen holder you exert pressure directly on the nib.
And if you're left-handed?
For left-handed people, a straight pen holder can be more pleasant because of the mirrored writing position. It is not a prerequisite - you can use an oblique pen perfectly as a left-handed person, especially this basic black oblique (also available in our modern calligraphy starter kit) is suitable, because it can be used universally for left and right-handed people.
