Wat is Gouache nu eigenlijk? In deze blog leg ik je uit! Heerlijk om weer aan het bloggen te zijn! I’m keeping the blogging spirit up. Een blog over goauche wilde ik namelijk al heel lang  schrijven. Zo heb ik nog meer van die onderwerpen die al super lang op mijn lijstje staan. De komende weken komen er nieuwe blogjes en video’s online!

Hoe spreek je dit onmogelijke woord uit?
Gouache spreek je uit als ‘gwosh’. Je kan er natuurlijk een mooi frans toontje aan toevoegen ;). Misschien een leuk feitje om te weten: het woord stamt af van ‘guazza’, een techniek met olieverf die vroeger werd gebruikt om wat goedkopere en frisse schilderijen te maken. Voor de experts: magere olieverf op tempera wat een mat resultaat opleverde.

Wat is gouache?
Gouache is een dekkende waterverf. En wordt vaak het kindje van aquarel en acrylverf genoemd. Gouache the best in de enorme verzadiging aan kleuren. De verf bestaat net als goede aquarelverf voor het grootste gedeelte uit pigmenten. Voor gouache worden alleen dekkende pigmenten gebruikt. Door meer water aan de verf toe te voegen wordt de verf transparanter. Gouache wordt bijna altijd op papier gebruikt, het hecht namelijk niet goed op andere ondergronden.

Plakkaatverf vs gouache?
Plakkaatverf en gouache is dezelfde soort verf. De termen wordt gebruikt om het kwaliteitsverschil aan te duiden. Net zoiets dus als bij aquarelverf en waterverf, dat is eigenlijk ook hetzelfde, aquarel is de kwaliteitsversie en waterverf de meer budget versie. In tegenstelling tot aquarelverf is gouache dekkend.

Waaruit bestaat Gouache?
De basis van Gouache bestaat vaak uit pigmenten en dextrine(aardappelzetmeel) of eventueel een gommiddel zoals arabische gom. Door pigmenten en alleen een beetje dextrine of gom wordt de verf vloeibaar genoeg om te gebruiken als verf. Anders zou je alleen een soort poeder in de tube hebben. De dextrine is ook een lijmmiddel waardoor de verf aan het papier blijft ‘plakken’.

How to recognize a good quality gouache?
Vroeger werd waterverf aangemengd met witte gouache zodat de verf dekkend werd. Inmiddels kan je goede gouache herkennen dat er juist geen dekkende witte verf aan wordt toegevoegd. De beste Gouache worden dus juist niet aangemengd met een witte stof maar bestaan uit een goede kwaliteit dekkende pigmenten. In een goede Gouache wordt dus zo puur mogelijk gemaakt. Hoe meer pigmenten, hoe beter. Holbein staat erom bekend dat er heel weinig aan de pigmenten wordt toegevoegd. Hierdoor is de gouache van Holbein iets minder dekkend dan andere Gouache merken. De kleuren van de gouache zijn daardoor wel ontzettend helder!

Sorry, ik kan het toch niet laten ;): Ik verkoop meerdere soorten Gouache, onder andere deze van Holbein en deze Winsor&Newton Designers Gouache. Waarschijnlijk zie je dan meteen: ik verkoop inderdaad alleen de wat duurdere Gouache. Ik denk namelijk dat je beter een paar betere tubes kan aanschaffen dan een grote set kleuren voor dezelfde prijs. Natuurlijk kan ik niet in jouw portomonee kijken, maar koop dus liever 5 tubes van een goede kwaliteit dan 20 kleuren matige kwaliteit :). Met die vijf tubes kan je heel veel kleuren mengen <3.

What actually is Gouache? I'll explain that to you in this blog! Happy to be blogging again! I'm keeping the blogging spirit up. For a long time I wanted to write a blog about goauche. For the coming weeks I will have new blogs and videos about topics that have been on my list for a long time.

How do you pronounce this impossible word?
Gouache is pronounced "gwosh". You can of course add a nice French tone to it;). Perhaps a fun fact to know: the word comes from "guazza", an oil painting technique that used to be used to make some cheaper and fresh paintings. For the experts: lean oil paint on tempera which gave a matte result.

What is Gouache?
Gouache is an opaque watercolor. And is often referred to as the baby of watercolor and acrylic paint. Gouache the best in the enormous saturation of colors. Just like good watercolor paint, the paint consists for the most part of pigments. Only opaque pigments are used for gouache. Adding more water to the paint makes the paint more transparent. Gouache is almost always used on paper, as it does not adhere well to other surfaces.

Poster paint vs gouache?
Poster paint and gouache are the same type of paint. The terms are used to indicate the difference in quality. Just like with aquarel paint and watercolor, which is actually the same, aquarel paint is the quality version and watercolor is the more budget version. Unlike watercolor paint, gouache is opaque.

What does gouache consist of?
The base of Gouache often consists of pigments and dextrin (potato starch) or possibly a gum agent such as gum arabic. Pigments and just a little bit of dextrin or gum make the paint liquid enough to use as paint. Otherwise you would only have some kind of powder in the tube. The dextrin is also a glue that makes the paint "stick" to the paper.

How do you recognize a good gouache?
In the past, watercolor was mixed with white gouache so that the paint became opaque. You can now recognise good gouache where no opaque white paint is added. The best Gouache are therefore not mixed with a white substance, but consist of good quality covering pigments. A good Gouache therefore is made as pure as possible. The more pigments the better. Holbein is known for adding very little to the pigments. This makes Holbein's gouache slightly less opaque than other Gouache brands. But it makes the colors of the gouache very bright.

Sorry, I can't resist;): I sell several types of Gouache, including this one from Holbein and this Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache. You will probably see immediately: I indeed only sell the more expensive Gouaches. I think it is better to buy a few better tubes than a large set of colors for the same price. Of course I can't look in your wallet, but rather buy 5 tubes of a good quality than 20 colors of moderate quality :). With those five tubes you can mix a lot of colors <3.

How do you use gouache?
Gouache itself is an opaque paint. Adding more water makes the paint more transparent. I will tell you exactly how to use the paint in a next blog, or maybe even a video!
