In deze blog review ik de Prima Watercolor Confections. De setjes van Prima zijn populair door de mooie selecties aan kleuren, en grote kans dat zo’n palet precies jouw favoriete kleuren bevat. Ze zien er in ieder geval erg mooi uit, maar schildert de verf net zo fijn als hoe ze eruit zien?

Het Prima Watercolor confections palet

De kleurtjes zitten verpakt in een fijn, stevig metalen doosje. Als je het palet opent, vouwt naast de deksel ook een extra plaatje open. Wanneer het palet opengevouwen is, heb je twee plaatjes waarop je de verf kan mengen. De napjes verf zitten geklemd tussen metalen randen en zijn dus makkelijk in je eigen volgorde in te delen.

Voor als je het fijn vindt: de lege rij in het midden is te gebruiken voor extra kleurtjes. Een extra rij napjes verf die passen er precies tussen. Aan de onderkant van het palet zit een ring, waardoor je het palet ook makkelijk vast kan houden als je op locatie aan het schilderen bent. Elk kleurenpalet zit op dezelfde manier verpakt.

De kleuren in het palet

Als er iets leuk is aan de Prima palletjes is het de selectie van mooie kleuren per palet. Nagenoeg alle merken doen een basis selectie in een palet, zodat je alle kleuren kan mengen. Bij de Watercolor Confections, kiest Prima ervoor om een kleurenschakering in een palet te doen die mooi bij elkaar past. De selecties aan kleuren die ze maken zijn heel tof. Er zijn 10 verschillende paletten beschikbaar. Mijn favorieten zijn: Vintage pastels, Pastel dreams & decadent pies.

Pigmenten en kwaliteit van de aquarelverf

Zoals altijd, test ik eerst de materialen voordat ze in de shop komen, zo ook de Watercolor Confections van Prima Marketing. Het merk claimt om Artist kwaliteit verf te leveren, dus ik was erg benieuwd of dit echt waar is. Wat ik vind: het is geen Artist kwaliteit, maar het maakt de verf zeker niet minder fijn. De verf is zeer gepigmenteerd en heeft andere voordelen. Het werkt namelijk wel heerlijk!

Waarom vind ik het geen Artist kwaliteit? Een professionele kwaliteit aquarelverf moet helemaal transparant zijn, dat is een vereiste voor professionele aquarelverf. De Watercolor Confections zijn niet zo transparant zoals een Winsor&Newton Professional dat bijvoorbeeld is. Dat is eigenlijk de enige reden waarom het geen professionele kwaliteit verf is. Er is ook iets te weinig bekend over de pigmenten en lichtechtheid.

Dat staat niet in de weg dat het wel een fijne kwaliteit verf is, daarvoor heeft de verf niet het label professionele kwaliteit nodig. Als ik de verf zou moeten labelen, dan zweeft het rond de student kwaliteit. De Watercolor Confections is dekkender en zorgt ervoor dat je heel makkelijk met de verf kan werken.

Unboxing&swatchen set

Een paletje zit verpakt in een papieren doosje en in het doosje zit meteen een papiertje waarop je een Swatch kan maken. Ik swatch twee palletjes: de vintage pastels en de Decadent pies. Je ziet natuurlik het beste op de foto’s wat het eindresultaat is ;).

Is dit een fijne beginnersset?

Als je echt net begint met schilderen is een Prima palet zeker een aanrader. Ik zou kiezen voor de Watercolor Confections als je graag met specifieke kleuren werkt. Het voordeel van deze palletjes is dat je niet meteen kleuren hoeft te mengen, iets dat ik in het begin erg lastig vond. Is dit palet iets boven je budget, is de Winsor&Newton Cotman setje aan te raden.

Wat voor penseel kan je het beste gebruiken met deze verf?

Voor aquarelverf kan je eigelijk alle penselen uit de shop gebruiken. De Princeton Heritage&Neptune zijn echt aquarel penselen. De Neptune reeks heeft hele zachte haren en houden het meeste water vast. De Heritage reeks is vergelijkbaar met marterharen en is veruit de meest populaire reeks van Princeton voor aquarellen. De haren veren makkelijk mee, maar gaan ook weer makkelijk terug in de vorm. Velvet Touch & Select zijn mixed media penselen en hebben daarom wat stevigere haren.

In this blog I review the Prima Watercolor Confections. These sets from Prima are popular because of the nice selection of colors, and there is a good chance that such a palette will exactly contain your favorite colors. They look very nice, but does the paint works just as fine as what they look like?

The Prima Watercolor confections palette

The colors are packed in a fine, sturdy metal box. When you open the palette, an extra plate will unfold in addition to the lid. When the palette is unfolded, you have two mixing trays. The pans of paint are locked between metal edges and can therefore easily be arranged in your own order.

If it is convenient for you: the empty row in the middle can be used for extra color pans. An extra row of pans of paint will fit exactly in between. At the bottom of the palette is a holding ring. You can easily hold the palette when you are painting on location. Each color palette is packed in the same way.

The colors in the palette

If there is something nice about the Prima Confections, it is the selection of beautiful colors per palette. Almost all brands do a basic selection in a palette, so that you can mix all colors yourself. With the Watercolor Confections, Prima chooses to put a color scheme in a palette that fits nicely together. The selections of colors that they make are very pretty. There are 10 different palettes available. My favorites are: Vintage pastels, Pastel dreams & decadent pies.

Pigments and quality of the watercolor paint

As always, I first test the materials before they arrive in the shop, including the Watercolor Confections from Prima Marketing. The brand claims to deliver Artist quality paint, so I was very curious if this is really true. What I think: it is not an Artist quality, but it certainly does not make the paint any less fun to work with. The paint is highly pigmented and has other benefits. It works wonderfully!

Why don't I think it is Artist quality? A professional quality watercolor paint must be  transparent, which is a requirement for professional watercolor paint. The Watercolor Confections are not as transparent as a Winsor & Newton Professional, for example. That is actually the only reason why it is not a professional quality paint. And too little is known about the pigments and lightfastness.

That does not stand in the way that it is a fine quality paint, for that the paint does not need the label professional quality. If I had to label the paint, it would float around student quality. The Watercolor Confections is more opaque and ensures that you can work with the paint very easily.

Unboxing & swatching set

A palette is packed in a paper box and the box immediately contains a paper on which you can make a Swatch. I swatched two pallets: the vintage pastels and the Decadent pies. You naturally see the best in the photos, which is the end result;).

Is this a nice beginner's set?

If you are just starting to paint, a Prima palette is definitely recommended. I would opt for the Watercolor Confections if you like to work with specific colors. The advantage of these pallets is that you don't have to mix colors right away, something that I found very difficult at the beginning. If this palette is slightly above your budget, the Winsor & Newton Cotman set is recommended.

What kind of brush can you use best with this paint?

You can actually use all the brushes from the shop for watercolor paint. The Princeton Heritage & Neptune are really watercolor brushes. The Neptune series has very soft hair and retains most of the water. The Heritage range is similar to sable hairs and is by far the most popular range from Princeton for watercolors. The hair springs easily, but also easily returns in shape. Velvet Touch & Select are mixed media brushes and therefore have somewhat firmer hairs.
